Every classroom has a review routine — but not every review routine has students cheering, strategizing, and begging for “just one more round.” Symbol Stack Skirmish is changing that.
Originally built for high-energy review in any subject area, this one-of-a-kind EMC² original transforms content recall into a physical team challenge using simple classroom supplies. No apps. No screens. Just purposeful play, critical thinking, and a whole lot of healthy competition.
NEW! Try the Story Stack Skirmish variant — a narrative-driven version of the game for ELA classrooms.

The Core Gameplay Loop (Same Across All Variants)
What Each Round Looks Like
Each round begins with teams receiving their next review prompt. Once the prompt is read, teams discuss and agree on an answer. If correct, they earn a “stack” — placing their next block on the tower. The first team to build the target structure (or the tallest tower when time runs out) wins the round.
Step 1: Stack Square
Teams start by placing their foundation block — this is earned for free to get the game moving.
Step 2: Build the Stacks
Answer prompts correctly to earn additional stacking blocks. Each correct answer = one block added.
Step 3: Defend the Build
Opposing teams can challenge an answer. If the challenge is valid, the defending team must remove their top block.

Why It Works
Stack Skirmish doesn’t just review content — it builds metacognition, teamwork, and strategic thinking. The physical component (building a tower) activates kinesthetic learners and adds urgency through a visual progress indicator everyone can see.
Research on desirable difficulty tells us that when retrieval practice is paired with mild physical or cognitive challenge, retention improves dramatically. That’s exactly what Stack Skirmish delivers — review with resistance, wrapped in play.
“My students literally beg me to play Stack Skirmish every Friday. It’s their favorite review format, and their test scores have improved noticeably since we started using it.” — 7th Grade Science Teacher
