What if remembering *one more fact* gave students the power to wreak havoc on another team?
That’s the premise behind Reverse the Curse!, our newest EMC² Learning game, where retrieval practice meets ridiculous restrictions and competitive chaos. Teams race to recall what they’ve learned while unleashing hilarious challenges on their rivals. From whispered conversations to bizarre writing restrictions, the rules keep changing, but the thinking never stops!
The Power of Remembering
Retrieval practice strengthens learning by challenging students to recall information rather than simply recognize or reread it. But meaningful repetition doesn’t have to mean another worksheet, quiz, or round of flashcards.
With purposeful gamification, the mechanics of play encourage the academic behaviors we want to see. In Reverse the Curse, remembering isn’t something students do before the fun begins. It’s what makes the fun possible.
Four Waves. Twenty-Four Curses. Endless Possibilities.
Of course, no respectable classroom curse should be entirely predictable! Reverse the Curse features four interchangeable waves of mischief, each introducing six unique challenges that shake up familiar classroom routines in unexpected ways.
Wave One: Starter Shenanigans
Every great adventure needs a little introductory trouble! Starter Shenanigans brings playful word challenges, silly writing restrictions, and accessible twists that make an excellent starting point for first-time players. It’s a perfect way to introduce the game without overwhelming students who are still getting comfortable with the experience.
Wave Two: Team-Based Turbulence
Think your students have teamwork figured out? Think again! This wave introduces communication complications and collaboration challenges that encourage teams to rethink how they work together. Familiar routines suddenly become a little less predictable, and students must find creative ways to keep their ideas flowing.
Wave Three: Brain Bender Bedlam
Things get especially interesting when familiar knowledge has to navigate unfamiliar language restrictions. Brain Bender Bedlam invites students to think flexibly, experiment with different ways of expressing ideas, and discover that even the simplest response can become surprisingly challenging when the rules change.
Wave Four: All Out Anarchy
Ready to turn up the unpredictability? All Out Anarchy introduces some of our wildest teamwork twists, shaking up classroom routines and inviting students to adapt on the fly. It’s the kind of delightful disruption that keeps students laughing, collaborating, and wondering what might happen next.
The best part is that every wave works independently, and every wave works together. Teachers can choose their favorite collection, combine a couple of waves, or mix and match all twenty-four curses to create an experience that fits their students. There’s no prescribed sequence or required progression, just plenty of opportunities to customize the chaos.

Chaos with a Purpose
Playful restrictions should create interesting challenges, not unnecessary barriers. In Reverse the Curse, students must adapt how they communicate, collaborate, and demonstrate what they know without abandoning the academic task.
That’s playing with purpose. The curses create the comedy, but retrieval drives the learning. Students repeatedly recall information, evaluate ideas, and adjust their strategies while staying invested in the experience. The laughter makes the game memorable; the thinking makes it worthwhile.

Print the Mischief. Or Put It on the Big Screen.
Reverse the Curse comes in two classroom-ready formats, giving teachers the flexibility to play their way.
The Print-and-Play Collection features four downloadable waves of illustrated CURSE CARDS. Print your favorites, mix and match the challenges, and bring the game to life with paper, pencils, and a timer.
The Reverse the Curse One Screen Wonder brings all twenty-four curses to an interactive classroom display, complete with customizable teams, CSV roster imports, animated card reveals, live scoring, and automatic countdowns. You can even upload your very own custom curse cards and shuffle them into the existing gameplay. No printing, cutting, or juggling timers required!
Both versions keep the focus where it belongs: students do the thinking while the game provides the excitement.
The Real Magic Isn’t in the Curses
Students may remember the ridiculous restrictions, unexpected twists, and laughter long after the game ends. But the real value comes from what happens along the way: retrieving knowledge, comparing ideas, correcting misconceptions, and collaborating under changing conditions.
That’s the difference between entertainment and instructional integrity. Purposeful gamification doesn’t replace meaningful learning; it creates compelling reasons for students to practice it. Reverse the Curse makes those opportunities playful, social, and memorable without losing sight of the academic goal.
